Slate is our prospective student information system. We use it to collect and manage prospective student data, campus visits and events, applications for admission and scholarships, and communications to students and parents. We started with our undergraduate programs and have recently expanded to include our graduate programs, as well. It also helps us to track our enrollment goals in real-time with powerful query and reporting tools.
  • Queries and reports.
  • Drip marketing.
  • Student data management.
  • Event management.
  • Application review.
  • Customer service.
  • Training and user support.
  • Including print mailings in drip marketing.
  • YOY reporting.
I would recommend Slate, by Technolutions for any higher education institution, big or small. Though there is a higher cost associated with Slate than most other options, it's well worth the price. The level of detail that you're able to gather, maintain, and query on within your student data is far beyond anything I've experienced with other systems. These insights help you pinpoint areas for action and improvement so that you can pivot when necessary, helping you reach your enrollment goals quicker and more efficiently.
  • Increased enrollment.
  • Increased student engagement with admissions counselors.
  • Increased event and campus visit attendance.
  • Increased email campaign performance.
  • Decreased time spent on data management.
Slate, by Technolutions, is so much more powerful and easier to use than Banner. While we still use Banner for our current students, it wasn't enough for what we needed to do to reach our prospective student population. Especially with the communication options, Slate is lightyears ahead of what is possible with Banner.
While some features are incredibly intuitive and easy for most users to use, there are other features that essentially require coding experience to understand. The features that seem more difficult than others are queries and reports (especially configurable joins queries) and some of the conditional logic within emails and print mailings. Additionally, implementation will definitely require dedicated IT folks for at least a year (or more).
  • Creating and managing forms and events
  • Finding student data
  • Editing student data
  • Running pre-made queries and reports
  • Creating new queries and reports
  • Setting up applications
  • Managing portals
Yes
I don't use it often, but the Slate mobile app seems to work pretty well. Our institution uses SSO (single sign on) and it is able to accommodate that kind of login. Once I'm logged in, I'm able to view student data and run queries and reports pretty easily on the go. Other functions are less easy to use in the mobile app; however, most of the time, I'm only using the app to find and view student data, so it works well for me.

Slate is being used by our university for the entire admissions process and for communication to prospective and applied/admitted students. It also being used as a contact database for organization contacts from churches to schools. It is being used for event management from overnight events to appointments and walk-ins. It is used for communication logging from sms messaging to phone conversations.
  • Their innovation and frequent release of new features.
  • Their ease of integration that makes use by any school absolutely customized.
  • Their invitation to be part of a large conversation on slate. [Their Twitter feed on the dashboard regarding all things slate]
  • Probably just the aesthetics of layout.
  • The layout and user friendliness of the mobile app.
  • As much as I love their organic marketing strategy, I would love marketing material to share with other schools while I'm on the road. [Youtube demo, clean social media channels, etc]
Any type of admissions/university scenario is going to be where Slate is well suited. Because of its customization opportunities, we haven't found too many scenarios where it isn't appropriate. Maybe working from the app on a cell phone? i.e. making calls from a query list because of the clunky mobile format?
  • It has dismissed the need for outside services such as Wufoo and Active Campaign.
  • It has dismissed the admissions main use of an outdated "crm": ECAMS.
  • It has intertwined the way that we house everything from digital documents to interactions in a simpler interface.
BLOWS THEM OUT OF THE WATER. Slate has consolidated where we can create forms and the student records we can easily tie them to. Slate is so enrollment friendly because it was literally created with that use in mind. Once you go Slate it’ll be hard to ever go back. It’s the prime CRM for the job and it’s functionality for SMS and robo call campaigns allows us to easily reach students/parents through multiple avenues.

Our company recently switched to [Technolutions] Slate in the last 3 years, and it has solved so many of our admissions problems. Having access to a portal that applicants can come back to and see clearly laid out what they are missing from their application file has allowed our admissions team to have better conversion rate of leads to applicants and applicants to admitted students. It's easy to use interface really made the learning curve a lot easier to manage.
  • Customer Support
  • Guided tutorials found in knowledgebase
  • Data Management
  • Functionality
  • Additional customization would ne nice
  • Constant enhancements
  • Wish there was more put into emailing and campaigns
Overall, [Technolutions] Slate has been an incredible CRM for our institution. It was easy to learn, and it does its job well. The ability for students to log back into a portal and see their application digitally has saved our staff a lot of time and effort. Previously, we had a web based application that didn't allow for applicants to be actively engaged in their application files and [Technolutions] Slate solved a real problem for us. It's affordable, intuitive and effective.
  • Decreased workload for employees
  • Accurate data tracking
  • Excellent reporting features
We chose Slate because it was customizable, provided accurate CRM data tracking and management, and was affordable. The software itself was updated and intuitive, which is something our previous CRM lacked. It had better reporting systems, easy set up and implementation across our institution, and the ability for applicants to monitor their own progress.
It's incredibly usable and easy to figure out. It's modern and does exactly what we need for it to do.
While I do wish they had actual representatives that we able to come to you for trainings for implementation and new users, I understand that a big draw is the money that is saved by instead investing in knowledgebase, which is it's online tutorials for different functions of Slate.

It is being used by our Admissions Dept. There is some use by other offices: Pharmacy/PA, Fine Arts, Financial Aid.

It is used for virtually all admissions/recruiting processing: communications, applicant ranking, event management, outreach/marketing.
  • Being able to create a standard communications flow to/from applicants.
  • Very intuitive interface.
  • Query functions are fairly robust, but easy for end-users to use.
  • Some of their table structures are overly complex; don't necessarily conform to usual standards in relational databases. This is being addressed, but some oddities still exist.
I am not an end-user but use Slate as an "outsider" since I'm in IT. I use it to verify data coming to and from our SIS PeopleSoft Campus Solutions. That being said, I think it is robust and easy for most to use. It is clearly seen as the "Best in Breed" for CRM/Recruiting/Admissions systems. I am a firm believer in going with such systems. There are strength and power in numbers.

Technolutions is rather nimble and responsive with updates and addressing needs.
  • Slate has allowed our Admissions Department to use more forecasting tools to plan their strategies.
We had been on Recruitment Plus- it has been sunsetted, so we were forced to move. I also looked at Fire Engine Red. Slate seemed far and away the most robust CRM/Admissions solution.

We needed a better CRM solution to attract new student population. We have worked with with different solutions/vendors on the past, but communication was just no effective and previous solutions were just too complicated and inefficient from administrative prospective. We needed something simple to have better impact and make processes on administration side easier and more effective. Provide staff with something that will allow them to better utilize their time.
  • Further impact
  • Easier communication
  • Easy to get going
  • It is really hard to mess something up
  • Admin interface looks like it is from 90s, internet evolved ever since
  • Integration with major student information systems (they are fairly new so I guess it's ok)
  • Their man developer is person who started company and he coded about 30 new features during their conference over night and published to production. It is great he is guru and he can do this, but there is no testing and what happens if something happens to him, no other developer have idea what was done in such a short period of time so it present a huge risk
If you need a better way to communicate with students and have further impact this is great solution because it handles email communication exceptionally well.
  • It improved communication tremendously
  • It saved some administrative processing issue
  • Down side is that it takes time to understand that outdated admin console
We used Ellucian recruit that is based on Microsoft Dynamics, I must say that Slate is much simpler to use and navigate for everyday user. While Dynamics is very powerful and robust tool it is really hard to navigate and keep track of campaigns and prospects. Slate is simplified version of dynamics and better suited for users who are in higher ed, while dynamics is more for "sales" in enterprise world. Education world is different.
